New York. I was hesitant to even step on the plane at 6 am Sunday morning a few weeks back. But with a black coffee, an apple, and headphones blasting Ellie Golding “Anything can Happen”, I was airborne with no turning back! My nerves were about to shoot through the roof. A window seat reserved for a clear view of the city upon landing I was ready for the city. I felt at peace knowing my gal pal and fellow Minneapolis blogger, Chelsea of Truelane.co, was on the plane with me. It would be her third fashion week, and needless to say, I was leaning heavily on her insights and guidance on navigating amongst the thousands of fashionables touching down in the Big Apple.
Getting to fashion week is truly half the battle. Random events pop up, you go with the flow, and of course the shows are amazing. A speedy 15 minutes of beauty that leaves you wanting more and already wishing it was Spring ’16. And don’t get me started on the models! Definitely makes you feel like you should never touch a fry again! The fashion is extreme, 88 degrees and sunny in NY, but that didn’t stop the fashion bettys from wearing their best furs. Many were dressed head to toe in fall, and sweating in the name of FASHION.
If it were up to me, I would just sit in a little folding lawn chair right outside the main doors at Skylight at Moynihan Station and stare. Stare at the fabulous street style which at this time of year is elevated to an all time super bowl status. Men and Women alike, all strutting their stuff up and down the walk way outside Skylight and hoping to snapped by a photog. Nothing is off-limits, and everything walks by. Girls wearing turtle necks and some in pretty much their bathing suits with a piece of lace over it – all FASHION! Celebrity’s, fashion mogiles, and girls just like you and me step out of their uber’s and make their way to the entrance at Skylight. And then we find our seats, phones in hand, iPads on standby and wait to watch the drama that is runway. (P.S. our girl gang was stopped a few times on the street and one of the photographers, Natasha Williams, sent me a few images – so cool!)
But beside the faux fur, glitz, glam and craziness, it is so easy to feel like one in a million, especially when you are amongst the best in the industry. I attended a blogger party specifically for the “crème de la crème” of blogs around the world and needless to say it was fantastic. I met a photographer I’m obsessed with, and you can freak out with me now, but I stood about a foot away from mega-blogger-babe & my girl-crush, Mary Seng of Happily Grey. I kept it cool but deep down I was feeling like a 14-year-old girl who just met Justin Bieber.
And that my friends is how we started day one of NYFW. Rooftop pool party, blogger babes, prosecco, shows, and ended with wine, pizza and lots of carbs, which were more than deserved after all of our gallivanting around the city. I was on such a natural high and feeling a bit like my inner Carrie Bradshaw from Sex in the City.
The shows attended included a bit of everything – Libertine, Michael Costello, Georgine, Nanette Lepore, Greg Polessini, Nolcha…my all time favorite was Libertine – wrapped with a big model dance party and the energy in the room was electric. We were also spoiled with the glam squad at Claudine – Hair, Makeup, drinks, and a left with a mega swag bag.
But my friends at James Jeans, definitely take the cake when it comes to entertaining, a beautiful soho loft style showroom with all the denim your heart could imagine. Followed by rose, treats, swag, and a photo booth to capture the evening. I walked away feeling full of heart. Also please check them out and feel free to use my special code at James Jeans – MACAROONS20 for 20% off your purchase good for the rest of the year!
My now gf’s and little #QuadSquadNYC (if you follow me on instagram search that hashtag to see all of our images + spots we tagged in NY) consisted of Truelane, Lyssmore, and Kelsey Bethune. Four girls representing different blogs, different cities, unique styles, and all crammed in a little tiny hotel room to attend NYFW. We all met for the first time in NY. We became instant besties over lattes and avocado toast, and the rest is history. I feel a bit like I went to fashion camp and made all these memories that are just ours for the keeping.
Amazing soul filled conversations dominated dinners, along with tears, insights, blogging woe’s, and a lot of plain old-fashioned goodness. So good it left me waking up in my bed on Thursday morning following my flight home, and wondering where everyone went? I highly recommend you follow along with these ladies. They are all doing wonderful things and not only are they beautiful inside out their feeds are very pretty to look at – just like them!
I feel thankful I was fortunate to go on this trip, that my husband was supportive, and that so many of you were excited to share in the journey with me through photos. I had moments of feeling so out of it, less than, comparing myself, and feeling like I have no clue what I am doing in the blogging world. Am I doing the right thing with pursuing this blog? Between snapchat scaring the living day lights out of me, keeping it old school with my PC, and rocking my Samsung Galaxy, I felt like a fish swimming up-stream at times. But who doesn’t?
I came home refreshed, and still feeling inspired post traveling. I always do when I travel, like I could have posted a picture on my instagram feed about every other minute, – but then that would have annoying wouldn’t it? So here is everything I want you to see and a beautiful summary of the time spent on my first Fashion Week. Already looking forward to NYFW ’16.
