The Boy Room Refresh That Finally Feels Just Right

Designing boy rooms can be surprisingly tricky.

You want them to feel playful, but not childish. Sporty, but not overly themed. Functional enough for real life, but still beautiful enough to flow with the rest of your home.

And if you’re designing for growing boys like I am, there’s another challenge: creating a space they won’t outgrow in a year.

That’s exactly why I keep coming back to Pottery Barn Kids.

This spring, we gave the boys’ room a refresh that finally feels like the perfect balance — light and airy, layered and cozy, playful and refined all at once. A room that still feels distinctly “boy,” but in a timeless way that can grow right alongside them.

A Sports-Inspired Room Without Feeling Overdone

My boys absolutely love sports, so I wanted the room to reflect that energy without turning into a loud themed bedroom.

Instead of leaning heavily into one sport or color palette, we focused on subtle details that feel elevated and intentional:

  • layered neutral bedding
  • soft textures
  • custom sports-inspired pillows
  • warm wood tones
  • an acrylic lamp that keeps everything feeling modern and light
  • and of course, the basketball hoop that gets used every single night

It feels playful without overwhelming the room — which is exactly the sweet spot I’m always trying to find with boys’ spaces.

Bedding That Feels Fresh and Timeless

One of my favorite updates in the room is the bedding.

The duvets and sheets instantly made the space feel softer, brighter, and more pulled together while still being practical for everyday life. I always look for bedding that feels classic enough to last through different stages, and PBK does this so well.

Nothing feels overly trendy, themed, or babyish, which means the room can evolve naturally as the boys grow.

That’s honestly one of the biggest reasons I continue investing in pieces from Pottery Barn Kids — their designs truly grow with your family.

The Details That Make the Room Feel Special

The layered rug helped ground the room and added so much warmth and texture, while the acrylic lamp brought in that clean, modern contrast I’m always drawn to.

And the custom pillows may be one of my favorite finishing touches. They add personality and a sporty feel without making the room feel too young.

Every piece feels intentional but still livable—which matters so much with active boys.

Pieces That Grow With Them

One of my favorite additions to the room refresh is their Anywhere Chairs from Pottery Barn Kids.

These chairs have honestly been such a staple in our home since the boys were little, and seeing them evolve with each stage has been really special. This time, I chose the new leather style, and I love how much more elevated and grown-up they feel in the space. They fit perfectly with the subtle baseball-inspired aesthetic while still keeping the room cozy and kid-friendly.

For the first time, I also decided not to monogram them.

With Bear coming up behind his brothers, I wanted something a little more flexible and timeless — and I ended up loving the clean, classic look even more. It feels refined, versatile, and designed to grow with our family over the years, rather than feeling tied to one stage.

That’s something PBK does so beautifully. Their pieces never feel temporary. They evolve right alongside your kids, making it feel so much easier to create spaces that last.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Pottery Barn Kids

I think what I love most about PBK is how seamlessly their pieces evolve with our family.

The room doesn’t feel temporary. It doesn’t feel like something they’ll outgrow next year. Instead, it feels layered, collected, and designed to transition beautifully through every stage.

That balance can be hard to achieve in boy rooms, but somehow Pottery Barn Kids always makes it feel effortless.

And now the boys have a space that feels fun for them, while still feeling cohesive with the style of our home, which truly feels like a win for everyone.

Thank you for being here,

XO Tamara
